Addis Ababa – (QN24) – The Election Of Somalia’s New President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud Is Expected To End The Power Of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki In The Horn Of Africa.

Afwerki Signed A Tripartite Security Agreement With Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo And Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed Ali In 2018.

The Deal, Which Was Initially Leaked, Was Later Revealed To Have Been Aimed At An Attack In Ethiopia’s Tigray Region, Which Is Controlled By The Afwerki TPLF, To Capture Abiy.

It Also Included Ethiopian And Eritrean Support For Farmajo’s Occupation Of Somalia, But Was Thwarted By The National Security Forces’ Resistance And Abiy’s Defeat In Tigray.

Abiy’s Attack In The Region Was Also Linked To Some Of The Somali Troops Sent By Farmajo To Asmara For Training.

Omar Mahmood, An Expert On The International Crisis Group For Somalia, Said The Agreement Is Now “Bilateral” At Its Best, If Not Dead.

“Although Hassan Sheikh Does Not Want To Distance Himself From Eritrea, I Agree That Isaias Has Lost A Friend In Mogadishu,” Said Tobias Hagmann, An International Relations Professor At Roskilde University In Denmark.

“The Eritrean Alliance Has Always Been A Short-Term Opportunity, And Afwerki Has Already Begun To Engage With The Ethiopian Amhara, Which Has Been At War With The Tigreans Since November 2020,” Hagmann Said.

Farmajo’s Defeat Has Been Hailed By Kenya, Which Has Repeatedly Clashed With His Administration.

Mehari Taddele Maru, An Analyst At The European University Institute In Florence, Italy, Sees Hassan Sheikh’s Election As A “Major Victory For Somalia And The Horn of Africa” Amid Tensions Over The Tripartite Agreement.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Congratulated Hassan Sheikh On His Victory And Said He Was Interested In Working With Both Countries And The Region.
