The entry of Ethiopian traders into the Somalia khat market creates concerns for Kenyan traders

Hargeisa – (QN24) – The Somaliland Government Has Made Changes In The Tariffs It Levies On Khat Imported To Its Territory That Is Mainly From Ethiopia And Kenya. The Government Has Not Clearly Stated The Motives Behind This Decision.

The Ministry Of Finance Announced That Somaliland Has Increased The Tariffs It Takes From Ethiopia’s Khat, Which Initially Was SLSH 11000 For 1KG And Now It Has Been Increased To SLSH 28000.

On The Other Side, Somaliland Has Decided To Lower The Tariffs On Kenya’s Khat, Which Was SLSH 38,000 For 1 kg, And Now It Has Been Reduced To SLSH 28,000 Which Is A Measure To Equalize The Tariffs Levied In Both Countries.

There Have Been Complaints Raised By The Somaliland Khat Traders Against Ethiopia’s Decision To Also Increase The Tariffs On Khat Exports To Somaliland.
